Net High Stakes Poker- Who is Gus Hansen?

Gus Hansen had an amazing year on the World Poker Tour where he was the only participant to make it to the last table in 3 of the competitions. Gus Hansen has appeared on High Stakes Poker on The Game Show Network where he paid $400, 000 to play. You might remember one of the largest pots in big stakes poker history competing against Daniel Negreanu. Gus won a huge pot with 4 of a kind against Negreanu’s full house. Gus has made many televised poker appearances and is thought to be one of the strongest players anywhere in the world. While betting on net poker, a different side of Hansen has emerged. He often competes in the 200/400 NL maximum buy in of $40, 000. Hansen frequently buys in for the min of $16, 000 and plays very poorly. He waits for a decent hand and then goes all in. I believe Hansen is a great poker player but certainly not even close to the regular players at 200/400NL. Unless he is penniless, he has no reason to sit at the game with the minimum buy in.

Playing for the min takes most of the skill out of deep stack poker. Gus is assumed to be one of the best poker players in the world but he can’t buy-in for the full dollar value. I think tv can skew our perception of the real world every now and then. The best players anywhere in the world might just be players you have will not have heard about. Gus can be seen gambling on net poker on Full Tilt. He generally plays in high stakes omaha hold’em and Holdem. Gus has shown himself as a competition player. Can he back up his abilities in money games?
