Hold em Tactics – Top Opening Hands

One of the biggest complications that I encountered when I first got into Texas hold em was figuring out what cards to wager on in what Placement. Typically I would have burned on a hand that I thought was a very good starting hand. Come to find out they were beneficial hands, just not in the placement I was betting them from. Here is a pretty basic list of what kind of hands to bet on and what location it’s suitable to wager on them in. Remember this chart doesn’t factor in raises or suits.

Bet on From Any Location

Ace, Ace King, King Queen, Queen Jack, Jack Ten, Ten Nine, Nine Eight, Eight AK Ace, Queen Ace, Jack Ace, Ten King, Queen KJ

Bet on Mid to Late Position

66 Five, Five King, Ten QJ QT Jack Ten

Play in Late Placement Only

A9 A8 A7 King, Nine King, Eight Q9 J9 Jack, Eight T9 Ten, Eight Nine, Eight Nine, Seven

For anyone who is just beginning to bet on poker, playing these hands at the suggested positions will help you often be in a safe position before the flop. As your game progresses, you will be able to add more hands to this list and know how to bet on them in specific situations.
